Action in Senate to Extend Energy Efficient Home Tax Credit
|
After the federal energy efficient tax credit of $2,000 expired on December 31, 2009, RESNET and a broad coalition of environmental, energy efficiency advocate groups and the National Association of Home Builders have been advocating the extension of the credit. Our voices have been heard. The U.S. Senate has passed legislation to extend the tax credit until December 31, 2010. The legislation would apply retroactively to qualifying homes that were sold since January 1, 2010. The one year extension will give Congress time to review the credit and amend it. Legislation has been introduced by Senators Diane Feinstein (D-CA), Olympia Snowe (R-ME) and Tim Jeff Bingman (D-NM) to include a provision of a $5,000 credit for meeting a HERS Index of 50. The U.S. House of Representatives will be taking up the extension shortly. After the legislation passes Congress, it must be signed by President Obama.
